PIO History & Heritage Exhibition 2025
On 11 July 2025, the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Malaysia organised the History & Heritage Exhibition 2025 at the International Youth Centre. The exhibition formed part of a broader series of community programmes aimed at highlighting the historical journey and cultural legacy of the Malaysian Indian community.
The exhibition was led by Assistant Secretary Kasturi Pandian and Committee Member Naantheniy Allenjeswaran, with the support of volunteers and community contributors.
Showcasing the Journey of the Malaysian Indian Community
The exhibition was graced by Pabitra Margherita as the Chief Guest, with Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister in the Ministry of National Unity Malaysia, attending as the Guest of Honour. The programme was organised in collaboration with the High Commission of India in Malaysia.
Through curated displays, historical photographs, archival materials, and informational panels, the exhibition highlighted key milestones in the social, cultural, and economic development of the Malaysian Indian community. Visitors were able to explore the diverse experiences of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in Malaysia and the contributions made by successive generations in various fields.
Importance of Heritage Preservation
Exhibitions of this nature play an important role in documenting and preserving community history, ensuring that the experiences and contributions of earlier generations remain accessible to future generations.
The programme also served as an educational platform, encouraging youth participation in cultural documentation and heritage awareness, while fostering a greater appreciation of the historical journey of the Malaysian Indian community.
By presenting historical narratives in a visual and accessible format, the exhibition helped promote dialogue on identity, heritage, and the importance of preserving cultural memory within diaspora communities.
Impact and Future Plans
The exhibition contributed to increased public awareness of heritage preservation while encouraging greater community interest in documenting and sharing cultural histories.
Building on the positive response, GOPIO Malaysia plans to expand the exhibition into a travelling showcase across various Malaysian states, allowing more communities and educational institutions to engage with the historical narratives presented.
The History & Heritage Exhibition 2025 reflects GOPIO Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Malaysian Indian community, while encouraging broader public appreciation of the community’s historical journey and contributions to Malaysian society.
