The arrival of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India on the 9th Jan 1915 has been designated as a landmark day for all PIOs. The day is celebrated as Pravasi Bharathiya Divas annually, in recognition of this great Pravasi Gandhi who brought independence to India. This struggle has been the precursor for the independence of many other Asian countries including our Nation, Malaysia.
In 2003, the Indian government, on the intense lobbying of GOPIO, initiated a Pravasi Bharathiya Divas Convention where PIOs throughout the world congregate in India on 7-9th Jan with a grand celebration on the 9th Jan. Since then, for 13 years, this engagement served as an excellent platform for PIOs to articulate issues concerning PIOs network and to strengthen the bond with India.
In order to further enhance the effectiveness of the engagement, the government of India has decided to reformat the PBD Convention to better focus for mutual growth. For 2016, the engagements will be on regional basis to gather feedback and suggestions for a better focused and dynamic PBD in 2017.
In line with that, GOPIO Malaysia has been invited by High Commission of India to anchor a live online interaction teleconference session with the Minister of External Affairs in Kuala Lumpur. Besides Malaysia, UAE, Singapore, United Kingdom and Mauritius will be online at the same time. This will provide an excellent opportunity for us to highlight our expectations and at the same time better understand the needs of the PIOs of the countries mentioned above.
The online engagement will be held on the 9th Jan 2016, from 5.30-7.30pm closing with dinner. The venue is at the Indian Studies Department, Faculty of Arts and Social Studies, University Malaya
We call upon you to actively participate in this event, as this will enable us to highlight issues that can bring better growth for PIOs by capitalizing on the robust growth of India.
Participation is strictly by RSVP ONLY and LIMITED to 500 pax.
