Opening Ceremony of 2nd PIO Day of Malaysia 2024

On the 14^th of September 2024, the SMK Vivekananda grounds in Brickfields, Little India, transformed into a vibrant cultural hub for the Opening Ceremony of the PIO Day of Malaysia 2024. This momentous event brought together approximately 1,000 attendees, including dignitaries from Malaysia and India, alongside overseas delegates from Australia, Canada, India, Mauritius, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Singapore.

This year marked the second collaboration between the Malaysian and Indian governments to inaugurate PIO Day, an initiative steadily gaining recognition on the international stage. The significant turnout underscored the importance of the event and its impact on the global Indian diaspora.

A Prestigious Inauguration

The ceremony was officially inaugurated by Yang Berhormat Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Minister for Digital, and His Excellency Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, India’s Honourable Minister of State for External Affairs. The dignitaries commenced the event by lighting a traditional lamp, symbolising unity, enlightenment, and cultural continuity.

In his welcome address, Mr. Gunasekaren Sreerangan, President of GOPIO Malaysia, warmly greeted the gathering, expressing appreciation for the growing enthusiasm surrounding PIO Day and the PIO International Festival.

Following this, inspiring speeches were delivered by His Excellency B.N. Reddy, the High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, and the two Ministers. Their words highlighted the enduring cultural and historical ties between Malaysia and India, underscoring the importance of events such as PIO Day in fostering unity and promoting collaboration.

Comments from the Dignitaries 

Yang Berhormat Tuan Gobind Singh Deo remarked that the PIO International Festival is more than just a celebration of cultural heritage. It is a bridge that connects communities, fosters dialogue, and strengthens ties between nations. Malaysia, with its rich multicultural fabric, is proud to host such an event that showcases the contributions of the Indian diaspora to our society.  He also emphasised the need to leverage digital platforms to enhance cultural exchange and preserve heritage, stating that In this digital age, we must use technology not only to preserve but also to promote the traditions and stories of the PIO community for future generations.

His Excellency Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh highlighted the significance of unity and collaboration. Added that “The People of Indian Origin are the living link between India and the world. Events like these strengthen our bonds of friendship and create pathways for cultural and economic partnerships. I am deeply moved by the enthusiasm and dedication displayed here in Malaysia.”  He also encouraged deeper engagement among PIOs worldwide, adding:  “The Indian government remains committed to supporting the global Indian diaspora. Together, we can build stronger connections that benefit not only our respective nations but the entire world community.”

The dignitaries’ speeches emphasised the growing significance of the PIO International Festival in uniting the global Indian community. They lauded the festival for providing opportunities to celebrate shared heritage, strengthen diplomatic ties, and create platforms for academic and cultural exchanges.

The event also set the stage for the wider PIO International Festival, which featured exhibitions, performances, and conferences aimed at promoting Indian heritage and fostering connections across borders. The Opening Ceremony highlighted the festival’s role in promoting Malaysia as a cultural and academic hub for the Indian diaspora.

The 2024 Opening Ceremony of PIO Day of Malaysia exemplified the growing importance of the Indian diaspora’s contributions to cultural and diplomatic ties between Malaysia and India.
