GOPIO Business Council Roadshow in Johor

On 14 May 2025, the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Malaysia organised the GIBC & GMBC Roadshow – Johor at Tropical Inn, located within Johor Tower in Johor Bahru. The programme formed part of a nationwide outreach initiative aimed at strengthening engagement with entrepreneurs and business communities of Indian origin across Malaysia.

The session was led by GOPIO Malaysia Business Council Chairman, Sivem Dorairajah, and was organised in collaboration with the Johor Indian Business Association (JIBA). The event attracted 50 participants, including entrepreneurs, SME owners, and business professionals from Johor and neighbouring areas.

Building Entrepreneurial Networks in Southern Malaysia

The roadshow introduced participants to the initiatives of the GOPIO International Business Council (GIBC) and the GOPIO Malaysia Business Council (GMBC). These councils aim to promote international networking, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among entrepreneurs of Indian origin worldwide.

Participants were able to engage in discussions on entrepreneurship, market opportunities, and diaspora-linked business initiatives, while also exploring how participation in the GOPIO business network could support business expansion and professional development.

Strategic Importance of the Johor Region

Johor occupies a strategic economic position in Malaysia, particularly due to its proximity to Singapore, one of Southeast Asia’s major financial and commercial hubs. As a result, businesses in Johor often operate within a dynamic cross-border environment that presents opportunities for trade, partnerships, and investment.

The roadshow therefore provided a valuable platform for entrepreneurs to discuss potential cross-border collaborations with Singapore-based businesses, while also strengthening connections within the local entrepreneurial community.

Impact and Future Initiatives

The event contributed to strengthening entrepreneurial networks in southern Malaysia while raising awareness of the opportunities available through GOPIO’s global business platforms.

During the discussions, participants also expressed interest in expanding cross-border engagement. As a follow-up initiative, GOPIO Malaysia plans to organise a Malaysia–Singapore PIO Business Roundtable, which would provide a dedicated platform for entrepreneurs from both countries to explore collaborative opportunities.

The Johor engagement highlighted the growing interest in southern-region business linkages within the PIO business ecosystem, reinforcing the importance of regional outreach in building a more connected and globally engaged diaspora business community.
