GIBC and GMBC Roadshows in Kedah and Penang
On 10 April 2025, Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Malaysia organised the GIBC & GMBC Roadshow – Kedah and Penang, aimed at engaging entrepreneurs and business leaders in the northern region of Malaysia. The programme was held at the Penang Indian Association in George Town and at the Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI) in Alor Setar.
The roadshow was led by GOPIO Malaysia Business Council Chairman, Sivem Dorairajah, and brought together 40 entrepreneurs and business representatives interested in expanding their networks and exploring opportunities within the global Indian business community.
Strengthening Entrepreneurial Networks
The roadshow introduced participants to the roles and initiatives of the GOPIO International Business Council (GIBC) and the GOPIO Malaysia Business Council (GMBC), both of which aim to foster cross-border business networking, investment opportunities, and knowledge-sharing among entrepreneurs of Indian origin worldwide.
By engaging directly with business owners in Penang and Kedah, the programme provided a platform for local entrepreneurs to learn about international networking opportunities, potential partnerships, and available support mechanisms within the broader GOPIO global network.
Importance of Regional Business Engagement
Malaysia’s northern region, particularly Penang and Kedah, plays an important role in the country’s economic landscape, with a growing number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs contributing to regional development.
The roadshow was therefore significant in bridging local entrepreneurs with international diaspora business networks, enabling participants to explore new markets, collaborations, and knowledge exchange opportunities that extend beyond national boundaries. Such engagements also help ensure that diaspora-led economic initiatives remain inclusive and accessible to business communities outside major metropolitan centres.
Impact and Future Initiatives
The session successfully raised awareness of the global GOPIO business ecosystem, encouraging entrepreneurs to consider participating in international forums, partnerships, and mentorship opportunities facilitated by GOPIO’s business councils.
As a follow-up to the roadshow, GOPIO Malaysia plans to establish a northern regional business group under the GIBC and GMBC framework, allowing entrepreneurs in Penang, Kedah, and neighbouring states to collaborate more closely and participate actively in future programmes.
The roadshow also marked the first formal engagement with northern-based entrepreneurs under the newly established GOPIO business councils, laying the foundation for sustained regional outreach and stronger diaspora-driven business networks in Malaysia.
