Launch and Publication of the 2nd PIO Studies Journal
On 11 July 2025, the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Malaysia officially launched and published the second edition of The Journal of PIO Studies at the International Youth Centre. The publication represents an important contribution to scholarly work focusing on the history, identity, and socio-cultural dynamics of Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) communities.
The initiative was led by Committee Members Manimaran Selvaraja and Naantheniy Allenjeswaran, who coordinated the editorial and publication efforts with contributions from researchers and academics.
Advancing Scholarship on the PIO Diaspora
The publication was launched by Ankan Banerjee, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs of India, who attended as the Chief Guest. The event was attended by around 100 participants, including academics, researchers, students, and members of the community.
The Journal of PIO Studies serves as a platform for scholarly research examining various aspects of diaspora life, including migration history, cultural identity, economic participation, and cross-cultural relations. By encouraging academic research in these areas, the publication contributes to a deeper understanding of the historical experiences and contemporary challenges faced by PIO communities worldwide.
Importance of Academic Publications
Academic journals play a crucial role in documenting research, fostering intellectual dialogue, and encouraging evidence-based scholarship. Within the field of diaspora studies, such publications help preserve historical narratives while also examining evolving social, cultural, and economic trends.
The publication of the second volume further positions GOPIO Malaysia as an active contributor to academic discourse on diaspora studies, encouraging collaboration between researchers, universities, and community organisations.
Impact and Future Development
The successful launch of the journal has strengthened scholarly engagement within the PIO research community, highlighting the growing interest in academic research related to diaspora identity and development.
The publication also received the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs Malaysia, reflecting compliance with national publication requirements and reinforcing the credibility of the initiative.
Looking ahead, GOPIO Malaysia plans to implement a double-blind peer review process for future editions of the journal, ensuring higher academic standards and strengthening the publication’s reputation within the field of diaspora studies.
Through initiatives such as the Journal of PIO Studies, GOPIO Malaysia continues to support research, knowledge dissemination, and scholarly collaboration, contributing to a deeper understanding of the global PIO diaspora and its historical and contemporary experiences.
