The 2nd GOPIO Business Council Roadshow in Penang

On 16 May 2025, the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Malaysia organised the 2nd GIBC & GMBC Roadshow in Penang at the Penang Indian Association in George Town. The programme formed part of GOPIO Malaysia’s continuing efforts to strengthen engagement with entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Malaysia.

The session was led by GOPIO Malaysia Vice President, Sashidharan Santhesegaran, and was organised in collaboration with the Penang Indian Association, one of the state’s longstanding community institutions. The event brought together 40 entrepreneurs, business leaders, and community representatives from Penang and neighbouring areas.

Promoting Diaspora Business Engagement

The roadshow aimed to introduce participants to the initiatives of the GOPIO International Business Council (GIBC) and the GOPIO Malaysia Business Council (GMBC), both of which seek to strengthen international business networking, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing among entrepreneurs of Indian origin worldwide.

The event was graced by Sundarajoo Somu, Penang State Executive Council Member, whose presence reflected the importance of fostering dialogue between government, business communities, and diaspora organisations in supporting regional economic development.

Participants were introduced to various GOPIO business initiatives, including opportunities to participate in diaspora business conferences, networking platforms, and cross-border collaborations.

Importance of Penang’s Business Community

Penang has long been recognised as one of Malaysia’s most dynamic economic regions, with a vibrant SME ecosystem and a strong history of international trade and entrepreneurship. Engaging Penang-based entrepreneurs is therefore an important part of building a robust diaspora-linked business network that connects local enterprises with global opportunities.

The roadshow provided a platform for participants to exchange views on business development, share experiences, and explore how diaspora networks can facilitate new partnerships, investment opportunities, and regional collaboration.

Impact and Future Initiatives

The programme generated renewed interest among entrepreneurs in diaspora-focused business initiatives, particularly in relation to upcoming GOPIO business events scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur and Puducherry.

As a follow-up initiative, GOPIO Malaysia plans to establish a Penang SME support cluster within the GMBC framework, enabling entrepreneurs in the region to collaborate more closely and benefit from structured networking and mentorship opportunities.

The roadshow also reinforced the longstanding collaboration between GOPIO Malaysia and the Penang Indian Association, highlighting the value of partnerships with established community institutions in promoting entrepreneurship and economic engagement within the diaspora community.
