Participation in the 4th World Tamil Diaspora Day in Chennai, India

From 11 to 12 January 2025, a delegation from the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Malaysia participated in World Tamil Diaspora Day 2025, held in Chennai. The event held at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandabakkam served as an important platform for Tamil diaspora representatives from around the world to engage in discussions on cultural heritage, socio-economic cooperation, and community development.

The GOPIO Malaysia delegation, comprising 20 delegates, was led by its President, Gunasekaran Sreerangan. The participation reflected the organisation’s commitment to strengthening engagement with global Tamil diaspora stakeholders while contributing to constructive dialogue on diaspora collaboration.

Global Gathering of Tamil Diaspora Leaders

The event was organised by the Government of Tamil Nadu together with several Tamil diaspora agencies and was supported by the state government. The programme was graced by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin, whose participation underscored the importance of global Tamil communities in fostering cultural connections and international cooperation.

Throughout the event, delegates took part in discussions focusing on diaspora engagement, cultural preservation, entrepreneurship, education, and opportunities for collaboration between Tamil communities worldwide and institutions in Tamil Nadu.

Building Partnerships and Opportunities

The participation of GOPIO Malaysia facilitated meaningful engagement with representatives from Tamil Nadu government agencies, non-governmental organisations, business leaders, and international Tamil diaspora groups.

These interactions helped to establish new contacts and potential partnerships that may support future initiatives in areas such as:

• Business collaboration and investment opportunities
• Educational exchanges and academic partnerships
• Cultural and community programmes involving diaspora networks

Looking Ahead

The event further strengthened connections between the Malaysian Tamil community and institutions in Tamil Nadu, while also enhancing GOPIO Malaysia’s visibility among international Tamil diaspora leaders.

Following the productive exchanges during the 2025 gathering, GOPIO Malaysia looks forward to participating in the next Global Tamil Diaspora Day in 2026, continuing its engagement in initiatives that promote cultural understanding, economic collaboration, and global diaspora connectivity.
