18th PIO Dialogue with the Government of India

On 7 January 2025, representatives of Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Malaysia participated in the 18th PIO Dialogue with the Government of India, held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar. The engagement formed part of continuing efforts to strengthen collaboration between the Indian diaspora and institutions in India.

The GOPIO Malaysia delegation, comprising five representatives, was led by President Gunasekaren Sreerangan. The dialogue provided an opportunity for participants to exchange views on the evolving role of the global Indian diaspora in contributing to India’s social, educational, and economic development.

Theme: Empowering Global Connections

The dialogue was organised under the theme “Empowering Global Connections: The Role of PIOs in Emerging India.” Discussions centred on strengthening partnerships between diaspora organisations and Indian institutions, particularly in areas such as education, research collaboration, and knowledge exchange.

The event was graced by Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT and KISS, whose institutions have gained international recognition for their contributions to higher education and inclusive social development. His presence underscored the importance of collaborative engagement between global diaspora communities and academic institutions in India.

Memorandum of Understanding

A key outcome of the dialogue was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GOPIO Malaysia and KIIT & KISS. The agreement aims to promote:

  • Academic excellence and institutional collaboration
  • Research on the Indian diaspora and global Indian communities
  • International engagement and educational exchange opportunities

This collaboration is expected to open pathways for knowledge-sharing initiatives, joint academic programmes, and research activities that deepen understanding of diaspora communities worldwide.

Looking Ahead

Following the dialogue, GOPIO Malaysia will work with KIIT and KISS to advance the implementation of the MoU, particularly in areas relating to diaspora research, academic collaboration, and international outreach.

The engagement reflects GOPIO Malaysia’s continued commitment to building meaningful connections between the Malaysian Indian community and institutions in India, fostering partnerships that support education, cultural understanding, and global cooperation.
