Cultural Heritage Tour to Kolkata and Bhubaneswar, India
From 6 to 8 January 2025, GOPIO Malaysia organised a cultural and heritage tour to Kolkata and Bhubaneswar, offering participants an opportunity to deepen their appreciation of India’s rich historical, spiritual, and cultural heritage. The visit was led by GOPIO Malaysia Vice President, Sashidharan Santhesegaran, with travel coordination support from Dravidian Travels.
The small group tour, comprising six participants, was designed to provide an immersive and reflective experience through visits to historically significant landmarks and sacred sites associated with some of India’s most influential personalities and traditions.
Exploring Kolkata’s Historical Legacy
In Kolkata, participants visited the ancestral residence of Subhas Chandra Bose, the renowned Indian freedom fighter and leader of the Indian National Army. The preserved home, now a museum, offers valuable insights into Bose’s life, his leadership during India’s struggle for independence, and the historical significance of the Indian National Army.
The group also visited the Ramakrishna Math monastery, closely associated with the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. This spiritual centre, part of the global Ramakrishna Mission, is revered as the place where Swami Vivekananda lived and later attained samadhi. The visit provided participants with an opportunity to reflect on the philosophical and spiritual legacy that continues to influence Hindu thought worldwide.
Encountering the Temple Heritage of Bhubaneswar
The tour continued to Bhubaneswar, widely recognised as the “Temple City of India”. Participants explored several ancient temples renowned for their intricate stone carvings and classical Kalinga architectural style, reflecting centuries of artistic and spiritual tradition.
These visits offered valuable exposure to the region’s longstanding religious and cultural heritage, enabling participants to gain a deeper understanding of India’s historical civilisations and their continuing relevance in contemporary society.
Impact and Future Initiatives
The tour successfully strengthened participants’ cultural awareness and historical understanding through direct engagement with significant heritage sites and places of spiritual importance.
Building on the positive experience, GOPIO Malaysia intends to explore opportunities for future heritage visits to other culturally and historically significant locations across India, enabling members and interested participants to further engage with the diverse traditions and historical narratives of the Indian diaspora’s ancestral homel
