A Journey Through Time
The PIO Day and PIO International Festival of 2023 unfolded a unique and enlightening experience in Brickfields Little India, Kuala Lumpur, through the captivating PIO History and Heritage Exhibition at the Kandiah Hall from 2nd to 4th June 2023.
This exhibition, a focal point of the festivities, beautifully showcased the rich history and heritage of the People of Indian Origin (PIO). Visitors were treated to an immersive journey through time, with artefacts, photographs, and informative displays providing a deeper understanding of the roots that connect them to their heritage.
The collection of artefacts was a testament to the diverse and storied history of PIO, featuring items such as old travel documents, bags, accessories, and even vintage rubber processing machines. Each item on display held a piece of history, telling a unique story that contributed to the rich tapestry of the PIO community.
The exhibition was made possible through the collaborative efforts of several co-organisers who played a pivotal role in curating and presenting this cultural treasure trove. These partners included the Malaysia Tamilar Sangam, Malaysian Bengalee Association, Malaysia Oriya Society, Gujarati Association, All Malaysia Malayalee Association, Sindhi Association of Malaysia, Telugu Association of Malaysia, and TATT Khalsa Diwan Selangor.
The contributions of major co-organisers and contributors added significant depth to the exhibition, with the Penang Hindu Endowments Board, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Center, and Malaysian Silambam Porr Kalai Council playing vital roles.
The opening ceremony added a special touch to the exhibition, as the Kutthu Vilakku was ceremoniously lit by both esteemed ministers from Malaysia and India. Yang Berhormat Tuan V. Sivakumar, Minister of Human Resources of Malaysia, and His Excellency Shri V. Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs, India, marked the commencement of this cultural celebration.
The expertise and insights of article contributors Dr Aruna Gopinath and Dato’ V. Nadarajan further enriched the exhibition, offering a scholarly perspective on the historical significance of the showcased items.
Over the course of the three days, the exhibition welcomed more than five thousand visitors. The curiosity and enthusiasm of the attendees reflected a genuine interest in reconnecting with their roots and gaining a profound appreciation for the rich PIO heritage.
