The Journal of People of Indian Origin (PIO) Studies was officially launched on August 14, 2024, at the International Youth Centre, Kuala Lumpur. This significant event, officiated by the High Commissioner of India, H.E. Mr. B.N. Reddy, brought together academics, community leaders, and members of GOPIO Malaysia. The journal, initiated by GOPIO Malaysia, aims to explore and document the historical, cultural, and socio-economic contributions of People of Indian Origin, particularly in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, while incorporating global perspectives.

The inaugural issue of the journal features six scholarly papers covering diverse topics. Prof. Dr. Ravichandran Moorthy delves into historical Indian interactions in Southeast Asia during the Melaka Sultanate period. Dr. Meljev Singh Sidhu examines Indian communities in Malay kingdoms through historical records from Perak, Kedah, and Perlis. Mr. Manimaren Selvaraja investigates the connection between ancient and contemporary temples in Sg Petani, Kedah. Ms. Dharmashakthini Arjunan explores leadership traits derived from ancient Indian texts. Dr. Baytoram Ramharack reflects on the legacy of Hari Prashad of Guyana, while Dr. Aruna Gopinath examines the impact of World War II on Indian communities in Southeast Asia, focusing on the Indian National Army and the Rani of Jhansi Regiment.

The launch concluded with a networking session, fostering collaborations among attendees. As a biannual publication, the Journal of PIO Studies aspires to become a vital platform for advancing research and celebrating the legacy of People of Indian Origin globally.
