The International Yoga Day was organised by the High Commission of India and GOPIO, with the support of Klang Town Council and Atmasiva Aashrem on 18th June 2017 at Wisma Ng Teng Chin in Klang. The High Commissioner of India, His Excellency T.S.Thirumurti was the Chief Guest for this Event.
International Day of Yoga, or commonly referred to as Yoga Day, is celebrated annually on 21 June since its inception in 2015. An international day for yoga was declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 11 December 2014. The Prime Minister of India, Sri Narendra Modi in his UN address suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world. 177 nations co-sponsored the resolution, which is the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA resolution of such nature.
This Yoga movement organised by GOPIO is for relaxation, rejuvenation and restoration of the mind, body and soul. More than 480 individuals joined this event. Among others, Yoga mats and t-shirts were given to all who participated. Certificate of Participation were also issued to all participants.
Since its inception, Yoga Day is celebrated by millions of people in large number of countries, cities and towns worldwide. Among the key benefits of Yoga includes, increased flexibility, increased muscle strength and tone, improved respiration, energy and vitality, maintaining a balanced metabolism, weight reduction, cardio and circulatory health, improved athletic performance and protection from injury.
GOPIO and the High Commission of India are also organising Yoga Teacher Training programme for existing and aspiring Yoga teachers, to become certified Yoga Teachers. The 12 weeks training programme is jointly organised with Netaji Shubash Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
