International Day of Yoga 2025

In conjunction with the global observance of the International Day of Yoga, the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Malaysia organised a nationwide outreach programme throughout June and July 2025, bringing yoga awareness activities to 200 schools across Malaysia.

The initiative was led by GOPIO Malaysia Treasurer and GOPIO International Secretary-General, Ravendiran Arjunan, and engaged more than 20,000 students from primary and secondary schools, making it one of the organisation’s largest wellness and youth outreach initiatives to date.

Promoting Holistic Wellbeing Through Yoga

The programme aimed to introduce students to the benefits of Yoga as a holistic practice that supports physical health, mental well-being, and emotional balance. Through guided sessions and awareness activities, students were encouraged to explore simple yoga techniques that promote relaxation, concentration, and healthy lifestyle habits.

By conducting sessions across a large number of schools, the initiative sought to ensure that the practice of yoga, recognised globally as a valuable wellness discipline, could be experienced by young people from diverse backgrounds.

Importance of Youth Wellness Initiatives

Youth-focused wellness programmes play an important role in encouraging healthy habits, stress management, and positive lifestyle choices from an early age. In the context of schools, yoga can serve as a practical tool for improving focus, discipline, and emotional well-being, while also fostering a sense of mindfulness among students.

The nationwide reach of the programme enabled GOPIO Malaysia to contribute meaningfully to health awareness and cultural appreciation, while encouraging schools and students to adopt activities that support overall well-being.

Impact and Future Development

The initiative successfully engaged over 20,000 students across 200 schools, demonstrating strong interest in wellness-based activities within the school environment. The programme also encouraged greater participation in health, cultural, and community initiatives among young people.

Following the success of the programme, GOPIO Malaysia plans to explore the development of a structured annual yoga education module, including the establishment of Yoga Clubs in collaboration with Tamil schools. This initiative aims to provide a more sustained platform for students to learn and practise yoga regularly.

Through programmes such as the International Day of Yoga 2025 outreach, GOPIO Malaysia continues to support community wellbeing, youth engagement, and cultural awareness, contributing positively to the broader Malaysian educational and social landscape.
