HISTORICAL MIGRATION OF THE INDIAN INDENTURED LABOUT TO SOUTH AFRICA: VISION 2030

Migration of the Indian labor from India started with the sail of the first ship to Mauritius. Post abolition of slavery, the Indian labor migrated under the contract system of the Indentured Labor towards the African countries. There was an emergent need of laborers in the tropical plantations in many African countries under the colonial rule. This created a huge wave of migration from many Indian cities to important ports in Africa. From 1834 to 1870 approximately 351,400 Indians immigrated to Mauritius only. ,/p>
