Balachander Periasamy - Advertising & Media ( GOPIO International Excellence Award 2010 )
Balachander Periasamy, born in 1965, was named after the famous Indian movie director, K. Balachander. As the motive behind his naming, Balachander became interested in movie since his school days.
Within a short span of time, Balanchander ventured into many business, i.e. planting his own mushrooms, supplying coconuts to all the temples in Klang Valley etc...but all that interests faded away as quickly as it came.
In 1989, his uncle recommended him a job as a driver in Mega Media, an outdoor advertising company in Puchong. Being unemployed for some time, he grabbed the opportunity and started as a driver. Within months he was appointed as a junior artist by Mr. Charles Dudley, an American working in Mega Media as an Artist or hand painter.
During this time, he joined night classes in M.I.A, a local college for a degree program in Designing and Graphic. P. Balachander was a quick learner. After 3 years, he resigned from his company and established Classic Billboards with his colleagues En. Hasrin and En. Sufian.
In early 80s and 90s, indoor and outdoor advertisements are merely by hand paintings. Classic Billboards embarked into Cinema advertising, hand painting the publicity materials for their movie releases.
With his persistence and hard work, Classis Billboard secured contract from big clientele such as Solid Gold, GSC, Five Star Trading, Warner Bros, Berjaya Communications, Skop Productions, Harivel Agency etc...
P. Balachander had a big vision for Classic Billboards. To fulfill clients’ demand in the rapidly growing orders and for cost saving, depending on 5 hand painters is unrealistic. He wished for a printing machine which can complete the tasks within minutes.
In 1995, P.Balachander made his first overseas trip to Orlando, USA to attend the International Sign Exhibition. Coming back with fresh new ideas and options are endless' vision, Classic Billboards (M) Sdn Bhd purchased 2 units of Digital printing machines from Fuji Xerox, which were the 1st digital printing machines in Malaysia.
In 2003, spreading Classic Billboards wings to Bangladesh, P. Balachander opened up a branch, Classic Billboards (Bd) Pte Ltd in Gulshan, Dhaka. Now Classic Billboards (Bangladesh) has an operating capacity and capability of 7 machines, 200 workers and with more than 300 customers across Bangladesh.
By the year 2010, P. Balachander, Managing Director and the brainchild behind Classic Billboards, has brought the company into the International foray by exporting banners to more than 55 countries worldwide for Warner Bros. International, 20th Century Fox Film, and Buena Vista Tristar, Nusantara Edaran Film, United International Pictures, Lotus Five Star, etc...
With more than 12 million in turnover annually, 70 workers, 15 indoor and outdoor printing machines, Classic Billboards (M) Sdn. Bhd. is also a proud publicity materials supplier to giant corporate companies in Malaysia - Digi Telecommunication, Nestle, Carlsberg, Pizza Hut, Liebherr, Mydin, MTV Asia, etc...and has branch and associates in India, Thailand, Maldives, South America, Nigeria, Singapore and Australia.
As difficult as it may be, P. Balachander's passion keeps him active and fresh with new ideas for Classic Billboards and adding another interest in his life as pass 10 Tumi Cilents demand in the rapidly growing orders time - breeding exotic avifauna.
