Yg Bhg Dato’ Hj Ameer Ali was born on 4 June 1956 in Penang. He is the third in a family of seven siblings. Upon obtaining a scholarship from MARA, Ameer Ali furthered his studies to the United States. He graduated from the western Michigan university (USA) with a Bachelor degree in chemistry and a minor in management in 1979. He pursued a masters degree in international management at the Sonoma state university in California in 1980.
After finishing his studies in USA, being a fresh young graduate, Dato’ Ameer was occupied with carving niche for himself in the banking industry. He joined Malaysia ’s largest merchant bank, Arab Malaysian merchant bank and worked in the banking division for 8 years.
In 1989, he left the banking profession, with the strong and continuous support from his family members and staff with a vision to turn his family business into a large empire. The legacy of MYDIN actually began way back in 1918 by Mr Gulam Husen Jamal, father of Ameer Ali. MYDIN, operating its first store in Kuala Lumpur. Dato’ Ameer Ali had a vision to expand and transform MYDIN from just an emporium into a gigantic hypermarket.
Under Dato’ Ameer Ali administration and with the support from his dedicated staff, Mydin has grown as a well-known brand in terms of household name. MYDIN evoke images of a place to shop for groceries and a choice of place for many SMEs to get their raw materials and supplies from.
Dato’ Ameer contributes significantly in social work via various corporate social responsibility programs. MYDIN Mohamed holdings Bhd always extend their assistance to the less fortunate, such as single mothers, orphans and disaster victims. On occasion basis, he gives motivational talks to right knowledge on how to be successful in the business area.
