HOLISTIC APPROACHES IN LEARNING DISABILITY

“If the child does not learn the way we teach, then we must teach him the way in which he learns” (Pollock and Waller). The increase in the rate of learning disability has been drastic and it’s a major concern for the education sector. These disabilities are also called ‘Autism Spectrum Disorder’. There is a wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms experienced by people.

Dealing with slow learning kids (remedial class) while still maintaining the current Malaysian Education Transformation programs requires an innovative learning approach. One that brings up an excellent outcome in the teaching and learning process. Special initiative called ‘Mutiaraku’ has been designed and delivered for these kids. Few basic areas of practice that are given importance include holistic approach or specifically classified as traditional methods in learning disability, have been tested.

Methods like Thoppukaranam (super brain Yoga), Pranayama, Yoga Asanas, Mudras, Varma Therapy, and Herbs (Brahmi, Rosemary, Peppermint) consumption been implemented in the ‘Mutiaraku’ project to reduce and eradicate the number of learning disabilities among kids particularly in the age range of 7-9 years in school. This project has so far delivered very encouraging results.
