Varmam is a special branch of Siddha medical system. Varmam is more than 10,000 years old and originated in the Lemurian continent (known as the Kumari Kandam in Tamil). The Lemurians or the Proto Tamilians used Varmam as a martial art as well as a medical system. This medical science had been developed by Tamil Siddhars and have transferred the knowledge to successive generations through verbal communication as well as palm leaf and paper manuscripts. Before the introduction of the herbal medicine in the ancient healthcare practice, Lemurians Siddhars practiced Varmam using their fingers on the Varmam points of the body to provide a remedy for the ailments.
Varmam points are bio-energetic sites through which subtle vital energy (Prana) flows and aid physiological functions of the body. These points are located in the junctions of nerves, naadis, muscle and bones. It is thus clear that Varmam is the pioneer of all healing systems in this world. This presentation brings out the history, classification of Varmam, physiological action and pathological aspects of Varmam.
It will also highlight its relation with bio-energy transmitter pathways (naadi), angular energy connections (Kona nilai) and the application of this art in therapeutics. It plays a promising role in reviving a person from unconscious state, instant pain management in neuromuscular-skeletal diseases and also in other ailments. The data for this paper has been collected from traditional paper manuscripts and printed books.
