1.INDIAN DIASPORA GLOBAL IDENTITY
Indian Diaspora is the third largest Diaspora in the world .People of Indian Origin(PIO) are spread in more than one 135 countries. They exhibit all the ethic, religious, and linguistic diverstties, which Indian has from Kanyakumari to Kashmir from Assam to Gujarat .Since they have adapted to local situation all over the world, their diversities have further increased . Yet Indian Diaspora possesses and demonstrates an identity which is global , and it transcends its variation what are those traits and features of global identity? How does it override multiple variations? What keeps it alive and sustain it for sush a long time ?And,what are its current challenges and its responses to the unfolding globalization?.These are some of the concerns relating to the identity of Indian Diaspora. An analytical understanding of the above issue needs to be arrived at notr as an isolated case but in comparative perspective along withother newly emerging Diaspora like that of Chinese.Answera of above questions need to be based not on the understanding of one or two regions but on a global scale.it needs to reflect on all varieties of Indian Diaspora like those who went as preachers, merchants, indentured workers, jet set skilled professionals,as well as semiskilled worker in the Gulf region. It needs to cover the segments, which is several generations older as well as those who are secondand third generation PIO.It needs to understand PIO not only inmulticultural or plural societies but also in highly assimilative societies and cultures like Francophone countries.
It is for this issues ferom the above perspectives that an acadamic seminar was planned. The present volume is an outcome of an academic sector conference as part of sixth global conventionof Global Organization of people of Indian Origin (GOPIO) at New Delhi on 6th and 7th January 2001 at Vigyan Bhawan .The Academic Sector conference was organised by Antar Rashtriya SahyongParishad in collaboration with Indian Counsil of Social Science Research,New Delhi. 2.INDIAN PROBLEMS IN MALAYSIA
This Publication is the series which GOPIO will be publishing to enrich the history literature of PIOs or People of India Origin.
This Publication is made possible through the concerted effort of numerous people. Years of continuous but soft reminders by Prof John Doraisamy for the need of this specific book by K.A. Neelakandha Aiyer, to be brought back into circulation; tracking the document and making it available for publication by Mr.K.Siladass of Kluang and keeping the spirit up all these years, that it shall be done by Dr.P.Kantha, together made this publication possible.
The actual execution is a tedious assignment. The team of Ms. Puni and Ms.Anita reproduced the text on an impossible time schedule. And Ms.Khartik Asok, desirous of a resource centre for publications on PIOs,for students and academics use,was always around to assure broad spread distribution, when the book is published,
A kind of a pillar of support, whenever GOPIO’s publication undertaken, is Soorama Maniam who is always there to see to the completion of the printing. And his supportive sister Ms Kamala, who has patiently, though with reprimands for short notice, rescheduled her printing schedules to accommodate GOPIO’s prints. We thank of them.
GOPIO is a non-funded and non-governmental organisation. All activities are made possible by voluntary contributions, mostly in kind and sometimes with funds. We thank all our supporters and volunteers for their donationsand their participation.
