Press Release: PIO Diaspora Scholarship

1. The PIO Diaspora Scholarship is offered by Government of India for the People of Indian Origin (PIO) from around the world. The PIO youth in Malaysia are also eligible for these scholarships and GOPIO and Edu. India are jointly providing the facilitation for Malaysian PIO youth to apply for these scholarships.
2. GOPIO Education Council is a collaboration between GOPIO and Edu India. This is a NGO and private sector initiative to provide counseling and the guidelines, for the youth to successfully apply for these scholarships.
3. Government of India representative agency for this Scholarship scheme, EdCil (India) Ltd. EdCil is the nodal agency for the implementation of the scholarship scheme. EdCil is based in New Delhi. The High Commission of India in Malaysia provides assistance and also promotes this scholarship scheme.
4. These scholarships are for students who have completed their A-Level or STPM to pursue tertiary education in India, except for Medicine and Dentistry.
5. Fields where students can apply are in :
- Alternative Medicine
- Agriculture Science
- Architecture
- Aeronautical engineering
- Arts and Humanities
- Computer Studies
- Commerce /Business Management
- Engineering
- Hotel Management
- Journalism
- Pharmacy
- Speech Therapy
- Veterinary Science
6. Students should have scored 50% and above in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology.
7. Tuition fees up to USD 3,600/ (RM 10,800) per annum will be provided in the scholarship. The duration of studies is normally 3-4 years.
8. If a student has not completed STPM or A Level in Malaysia, they can still continue Pre- University studies in Bangalore at Reva College or Sai Ram College. A total of MYR 16,000 for the 2 year duration meets the tuition fees, board & lodging.
9. Interested students can apply through GOPIO or Edu India. They will facilitate and counsel the students on the relevant fields, before their applications are sent to India for the University placements.
10. The date line for submission of application in Kuala Lumpur is 6th June 2011.
