KUALA LUMPUR: India has offered scholarships to students of Indian origin around the world but wants more Malaysians to apply.

To make matters worse, many Malaysians are not even aware of the basic eligibility criteria, claims Dr Aruna Gopinath, head of Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin’s (Gopio) Education Council, Malaysia.

About 100 scholarships under the Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) have been awarded to Indian nationals and applicants of Indian origin from 40 countries.

The courses include engineering, liberal arts, business, journalism, hotel management, sciences and others offered by 60 participating universities in India.

Dr Aruna said while most pre-university courses would qualify applicants for the scholarship, some STPM graduates were ineligible as they had not taken physics as one of their subjects.

“To avoid this problem, we recommend students take A-Levels, an Indian pre-university course or ensure their STPM subjects include physics, mathematics and chemistry,” she said at the Gopio headquarters in Brickfields here.

She said the target for this year was to award at least 10 scholarships to Malaysian Indians.

In 2010, only five Malaysian Indians applied for the SPDC with all of them successful.

“One of the objectives of the programme is to encourage studying in India for courses other than medicine and dentistry,” said Dr Aruna.

She urged interested candidates to apply before the submission deadline on June 10.
