KUALA LUMPUR: The Indian government has offered a number of scholarships for students of Indian origin all over the world but there have been hardly any takers in Malaysia.
Some of the few who had applied were not aware of the basic eligibility criteria, said Dr Aruna Gopinath, head of Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin’s (GOPIO) Education Council, Malaysia.
She said that applicants must have taken Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry in their STPM to be eligible for the scholarships and stressed that the scholarships are not for medicine or dentistry although there was an allocation for traditional medicine.
“We targetted 10 applicants last year from Malaysia, but only five applied,” she said.
The scholarships are for courses in engineering, liberal arts, business, journalism, hotel management, sciences and others in 60 participating universities in India. There are 100 scholarships for applicants from 40 countries, she said.
She urged interested candidates to apply before the submission deadline on June 10.
