Foreign Universities to enter Sri Lanka’s Academic Field

The Minister of Higher Education of Sri Lanka informs that Sri Lanka would soon be opening of faculties by a large number of prestigious foreign Universities.
He told a Media Conference held yesterday that Universities in India, Australia, Malaysia, the U.K, United States , and Japan are seriously considering the possibility of opening faculties in Sri Lanka. They are also considering the possibility of bringing down students from their countries to follow degree courses in Sri Lanka, he said.
He said that it will be made mandatory for these faculties to provide 20% of their seats to local students, under scholarships. He said that many Universities have expressed willingness to adhere to this policy and one such University is the Tokyo University of Japan.
Mr. Dissanayake said that some Universities have sent their representatives to survey on the feasibility of locations and other requirements.
Meanwhile, the government has decided to increase the salaries of the Academic Staff of the local Universities. The increase will amount to about 35% and which will be effective from January 2011.
Mr. Dissanayake speaking further said that the University system will be structured to mould the children as visualized in the Mahinda Chinthana. Accordingly Sri Lanka’s higher education is to take a new direction from this year. The Minister said that Presidential awards would be presented to the best university, best vice chancellor, best faculty and the best under-graduate
He said that undergraduates would be made suitable for the growing employment market, and courses of higher educational institutions would be amended targeting employment opportunities.
Sri Lanka is also to award scholarships to 150 foreign students to study degree courses in Sri Lankan Universities, and another group would be admitted on payment basis and the revenue collected would be utilized to upgrade the Universities.
Under the new arrangements being made by Minister Dissanayake it has become compulsory for students to sit for a general English exam at the advanced level examination who expect to follow higher studies. Arrangements have also been made for the students who would be admitted to the local Universities to be provided with a three weeks of leadership training with the assistance of the security forces.
