KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) — Malaysia and India will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in technical assistance in highway building and management before the end of the year.
Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the technical assistance that the Indian government sought was in repairing and maintaining a highway.
New Delhi will in turn offer Kuala Lumpur the job of constructing 1,000km of highway in India, he told reporters after a ceremony to mark the start of the North Kinrara Junction Extension Project here.
He said his ministry received the final draft of the MoU from the Indian High Commission.
“I believe the memorandum can be signed quickly …we suggest before the end of the year,” Shaziman said.
Shaziman said the highway project offered by India worth US$5 billion (about RM15.4 billion) would provide great opportunities for Malaysian road engineering companies to spread their wings overseas.
He said the Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was very impressed with Malaysian roads.
Referring to the floods, he asked that the works department operations rooms in all the affected districts be opened round the clock to give information on the state of roads through local radio.
The extension project costing RM13.6 million is to make smoother travel from Petaling Jaya through the new Pantai Highway to Puchong/Subang Jaya and the surrounding areas.
Shaziman believes that the project will benefit more than 30,000 residents in the areas around the route.
