Kuala Lumpur, Sept 20 (PTI) Praising the Malayalee community for their contributions to Malaysia, Prime Minister Najib Razak has said that the people of the multi-ethnic country can learn from its rich tapestry and help the nation move forward.
Najib, who has been propagating the ”1Malaysia” concept across the country, said Malaysia needed the support of everyone to work together in nation-building.
“On behalf of the government, I wish to say a big thank you to all Malayalees who have contributed to the development of Malaysia,” he said yesterday at the ”1Malaysia” Malayalee community luncheon in Seri Kembangan near here.
The event was attended by 7,500 people and was billed the largest Malayalee gathering ever in this southeast Asian country.
Malaysian Indian Community (MIC) president Samy Vellu, Peoples Progressive Party president M Kayveas and All Malaysia Malayalee Association president Ravindran Menon were present at the gathering.
He said the community had contributed vastly to the plantation, business, entrepreneurial and education sectors and pointed out that its multi-cultural and multi-religious characteristics were a precursor to his 1Malaysia concept.
Malaysia is made up of three main races, the majority Malays who are all Muslims, 25 per cent ethnic Chinese who are Christians and Buddhists and eight per cent ethnic Indians who are mostly Hindus from Tamil Nadu.
However, there is small community of Keralites, who are Hindus, Christians and Muslims. Sikhs and Jains also form part of the Indian community in Malaysia.
Najib said efforts to transform the country must be based on inclusiveness or else the Government Transformation Plan, Economic Transformation Programme and New Economic Model would all come to nought.
Najib said inclusiveness also meant ensuring that government policies were fair to all and would allow every Malaysian talent to realise his maximum potential. He said national unity and social justice were among the important principles enshrined in the 1Malaysia concept.
“I would like to see that under the Malaysian sun, every single person will have his or her rightful place.”
He said Malaysians could help propel the country forward by learning from one other. Giving an example, he said the Malay community could learn from the Malayalees on their commitment to education and acquisition of knowledge.
