Protect and promote heritage, Indians urged

THE Indian community must take action to protect and promote the Tamil language and culture in this country, Tamil Nesan reported.

It quoted Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk T. Murugiah as saying this after attending the Tamilar Thirunal Cultural Festival organised by the Malaysian Tamil Youth Bell Club Kulai branch on Sunday.

He said Indians must be proud of their heritage and take steps to promote and highlight their culture and traditions to other races.

The time would come when the community would stand tall and be recognised for its achievements, he added.

He also said the Indian business community must not only be well educated but also have the skills to become successful.

He said more people were becoming addicted to gambling and willing to lose thousands by placing bets at gambling outlets.

He noted that, initially, betting was allowed only on Saturday and Sunday. Wednesday was later added to the list and now Tuesday had been included under the guise of special draws.

He said that with rising prices, many people were tempted to gamble in the hope of striking it rich to ease their financial woes, and added that it was not surprising to find women joining the queue with the men to place bets at gambling outlets.

> Makkal Osai reported that Kamal Haasan, reputedly the biggest star in South Indian cinema, who recently celebrated his 50th anniversary in the field, will make a comeback to the Malayalam movie industry after 23 years.

The multi-talented actor, last seen in the movies Chanakyan and Daisy, will make a comeback in Four Friends, which is directed by Saji Surendran.

The movie tells the story of three friends who embark on a journey to search for one of their lady loves from the past.

It features Jayaram, a close friend of Kamal who acted with him inChanakyan about 23 years ago, Kunchakko Boban, Jayasuriya and Meera Jasmine.
