Some Hindu and Chinese temples in Malaysia, including the famous Batu Caves shrine here, have decided to step up security following reports of threats to blow up certain places of worship by a militant group.
The Chairman of the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Devasthanam at Batu Caves, R Nadarajah, said the 24-member temple committee would have an emergency meeting soon to discuss additional security for the temple, a major tourist site in Malaysia.”We will also install CCTVs within the perimeters of the temple and have more security guards to carry out patrols,”.
The Star quoted Nadarajah as saying.”I was shocked after reading about the threat. I knew it was Batu Caves after reading it,”he said.Nadarajah said he would request for more police presence near the temple. He said that they might even consider screening the people to prevent any untoward incident.
Sri Subramaniar Swamy Devasthanam also known as Batu Caves Temple is a prominent religious site for Hindus across the world. In Penang state, the managing body of the Chinese Kek Lok Si Temple asked the police to set up a police base at the temple. The Managing trustee of the Nattukotai Chettiar Temple Trustees N Ramanathan said they would tighten security at the four temples under their purview.
Malaysian authorities recently found that the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) terrorist group had been recruiting university students to take part in jihad. However, the country’s police chief has said the JI operatives were not not linked to any political body in Malaysia.Inspectorr-General of Police Musa Hassan noted that Investigations have shown that JI operatives were working independently to recruit Malaysian students to participate in’jihad’(holy war) abroad.
Warning students not to follow the path of terror, Musa asked students to cooperate with the police to stop the recruitment drive by international terror organisations.Musa said police had thwarted the group’s plot to bomb two places of worship in the country some six months ago.Police have so far nabbed 10 foreign JI members who had been trying to recruit 20 university students.
The foreigners have been deported and jailed in their respective countries.JI is believed to be associated with the al-Qaeda global terrorist organisation.Prime Minister Najib Razak on Wednesday ordered the police and the ministry to take immediate action to prevent terror groups from spreading their influence here.
