Press Statement 11/01/2010
Fire bombing of Churches is not a minor crime
Arson of Churches or any prayer houses is a serious crime that must be immediately stopped to prevent further the events going out of control and descending to mob rule. This is a time for all national leaders to voice clearly that violent protests has no place at all in Malaysia.
The Council of GOPIO and 24 PIO sister Organisations urges,
All political leaders on both sides of the power corridor to come together and put a stop to the rising of the people’s emotion.
The debate on the usage of the word Allah has rightly been taken through the court process. This judiciary process has been going on for more than a year and there is no excuse for any group of people to get overtly worked up.
There must be a conscious call and efforts by all to uphold the judicial process and practice the rule of law in the country.
Racial or religious confrontations or challenges, are definitely not the means for 1 Malaysia. This is also not the environment to achieve a developed nation status.
As it is, Malaysia has not caught up with the other countries in the ASEAN Region in the economy recovery, from the global credit crisis of 2008.
Much needs to be done to achieve the country’s old economic growth rates. Religious or racial tensions will never help the economy recovery. The current emotional stance against the mainstream peace loving people in Malaysia must be diffused.
Political leaders must set the right tone with the right sound bites and rise above their parties’ partisan politics and demonstrate their Statesmanship to all sections of the population.
Good leaders will know how to diffuse the emotions. Only weak leaders will want to ride on the crest of emotions of simplistic people.
The Council of GOIPIO and twenty four PIO Sister Organisations,
appeal to all NGO leaders, medias’ and Public Communicators to collectively voice their abhorrence of violent politics and further call on the national political leaders to demonstrate their Statesmanship.
GOPIO appeals to all NGOs to prevent circulation of wrong messages to the public on this judiciary matter on the usage of the word Allah.
We call on all to uphold the rule of law and value the good multi – race relationship of the people and the peace in Malaysia.
